Set up a Fire TV Stick: from the HDMI port to your first app
On this page
What to have ready before you turn it on
Your new Fire TV Stick is unboxed, but the TV still shows its usual programming. Start with the connections, not an app download. Have the Stick, included power adapter and cable, remote, and batteries ready. You will also need an available HDMI port, your Wi-Fi credentials, and your Amazon account. Q1
Make a note of which HDMI port you use. This small step saves you from searching between HDMI 1, HDMI 2, and the input for a connected game console later.
1. Connect the Stick and power supply
Connect the Stick to the TV and use the designated power adapter in a wall outlet. For setup, Amazon recommends not simply powering the Stick from the TV’s USB port. The included HDMI extender can help when the port is hard to reach. Q1
Then use the TV remote to select the HDMI input you actually used. The TV remote and Fire TV remote have different jobs at first: you need the TV remote to switch to the new video source.
2. Set up Wi-Fi and your account
Follow the on-screen prompts. You can use the phone or remote option offered there to set up the network. Then register the Stick to the intended Amazon account. Q1
If an activation code appears, use the address shown on the TV itself. Type it in yourself and check the domain before entering account details. You do not need an activation page from an advertisement for this step.
3. Start with one app before planning a movie night
First install the app for a service you already use. Sign in separately and open a title included with your access. Setting up a Stick and subscribing to content are two different things. A new subscription is not a required part of every setup.
If an app is missing, read IPTV and apps on Fire TV. The guide to players and TV services explains the difference between them.
Where does setup get stuck?
- No startup screen: Continue with Fire TV Stick has no picture.
- No network connection: The Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide can help narrow it down.
- No response: First check how to pair the remote.
You do not have to start the whole setup over after every problem. Note the last step that worked. That is where the next troubleshooting step begins.
