Pair a Fire TV remote: with or without your old remote

Updated

On this page

First, figure out which controls still work

Your replacement remote has arrived, but it does not respond right away. Before trying random button combinations, answer two questions: Is it compatible with your Fire TV model, and can you still use the menu with the old remote? Amazon notes that not every remote works with every device. Q1

Check the model information and batteries. A similar-looking remote is not proof of compatibility. A button lighting up does not, by itself, confirm that it has connected to the Stick.

Option 1: The old remote still works

On the Fire TV menu, open Settings and then the section for controllers, remotes, and Bluetooth devices. Select Amazon Fire TV Remotes and add a new one. Put batteries in the new remote. If it does not appear, Amazon says to hold the Home button for about 10 seconds. Q1

Menu labels may vary by interface. Look for the section that adds a remote instead of trying to force a menu path that is not there.

Option 2: The old remote is missing or broken

Amazon describes restarting the device by unplugging and reconnecting its power. Wait for the prompt about the missing remote, put batteries in the replacement, and let the device try to pair. If it does not pair, holding Home for about 10 seconds is also the next step Amazon lists. Q1

Give each attempt time and watch the screen. Repeatedly unplugging the device in the meantime may interrupt the step you are trying to check.

Paired, or only partly working?

After pairing, try three simple actions: navigate the home screen, open an app, and go back. If those work but volume does not, note that difference. Remote navigation and control of other devices are not automatically the same problem.

A factory reset of the entire Stick is not a useful first substitute for checking compatibility. If the problem continues, use the help for your specific remote; do not apply a reset sequence from another model without checking it.

What to note before returning the remote

Write down the Stick model, remote model, batteries used, and any message on screen. Also note whether the old remote still works. These details make it easier to discuss the problem than simply saying “it doesn’t work.”

If the TV has no picture, start with HDMI and signal troubleshooting. For initial setup, see setting up a Fire TV Stick.
