Fire TV Stick won't connect to Wi-Fi: narrow down the problem
On this page
Three problems that often get described the same way
“Wi-Fi isn’t working” could mean your network does not appear at all, the password is rejected, or the device connects but cannot load content. Which one are you seeing? The answer determines what to try next.
Write down the network name and exact error message. Do not post your Wi-Fi password. Support usually does not need it in a report.
Start with the built-in diagnostics
Fire TV has a tool for checking network status. Amazon describes opening it through Settings, Network, and the Play/Pause button; compatible devices may offer additional tests. Start by following the instructions shown there. Q1
Note whether the diagnostic points to the connection to your home network or to internet access beyond it. Another video service failing to load is not, by itself, a precise measurement of that distinction.
If the network appears but the connection fails
Check the selected network name and carefully enter its password. Your Amazon account password cannot replace your Wi-Fi password. If the network was recently changed, reconnecting may help.
Amazon lists restarting the device, toggling Wi-Fi off and on, and, if needed, forgetting and reconnecting to the network. For a power restart, its help says to wait 10 seconds. Q1
If several devices fail at once
Compare with a second device on the same home network. If that device also has no internet access, investigate the shared connection. Restarting the router temporarily disconnects other devices too. Plan for that instead of switching it off without warning during someone else’s meeting at home.
If only the Stick is affected, check where it is placed. Trying it closer to the router can help you see whether reception is a factor. But do not buy new network equipment based on a single loading error.
When to stop changing settings at random
If the same error remains after the basic steps, gather the model, software version, network message, and diagnostic results. A factory reset appears later in Amazon’s help; it is not required for every connection problem. Q1
If the connection works but video stutters, read IPTV buffering: connection or source?. For help with initial device setup, see setting up a Fire TV Stick.
