Free Live TV Online in the U.S.: Start with Official Streams

Updated

On this page

Start with an official service

Some U.S. services offer free, ad-supported live channels online. Pluto TV publishes a free live TV lineup, and Tubi lists live channels as well as on-demand programs. Their lineups and availability can change, so look up the specific program or channel on the official service before you plan to watch. Q1 Q2

“Free” may mean no subscription fee, while ads still appear. It does not mean every local broadcast, sports game, or cable channel is included. A service’s free channel guide is not the same thing as a complete cable lineup.

Choose a device

On a computer, start at the service’s official website. On a phone or TV, install its app from the device’s own app catalog and check the publisher. Device support can differ; Tubi lists supported platforms on its site, for example. Q3

If you are looking for local public television, check your local PBS station and the official PBS app. PBS says live streams are available only through supported browsers and certain listed devices, and station availability may vary. Q4

Before you press play

Check four things:

  • Official source: Confirm the domain or app publisher.
  • Program availability: Search for the exact channel or event; rights can vary by location and time.
  • Account requirements: A free service may still ask you to create an account for some features or programs.
  • Device support: Check the official device list for your TV model or streaming device.

Be wary of sites promising every premium channel for free, asking you to install an unknown player, or pushing unrelated downloads. An M3U file is a format, not proof that its streams are authorized. Do not share private playlist URLs or account information publicly.

If a stream will not start

Refresh the official app or page, check for a service notice, and update the app through the device’s catalog. If the issue happens only on a TV connected over Wi-Fi, compare its connection with another device or a wired connection. Our buffering guide walks through those checks.

A title may be unavailable because of location, schedule, or rights. Check the official program listing rather than searching for an unofficial copy.

When a paid live TV service may fit better

If you need a particular local station, sports event, or broadcast channel, compare paid live TV services using their current channel lists and ZIP-code availability tools. For example, YouTube TV and Hulu + Live TV publish supported-device and local-channel information on their official pages; lineups and regional availability vary. Q5 Q6
