Set Up an M3U Playlist and EPG: Match Channels to Guide Data
On this page
M3U and EPG do different jobs
An M3U file or URL typically lists channels and stream addresses. An electronic program guide (EPG), often provided as XMLTV, contains program titles, times, and descriptions. The playlist tells the player what channels are available; the EPG tells it what is scheduled.
That is why channels may play while the guide remains empty. The playlist can load correctly even when guide data is missing or cannot be matched. A playlist format does not establish permission to watch a stream; use only a source you are authorized to access.
Check three things before setup
Have the M3U file or URL, the EPG file or URL, and any service credentials. Copy addresses exactly; some services put credentials inside a URL. Check that your player supports M3U and XMLTV. Kodi’s PVR IPTV Simple Client documentation describes M3U for channels and XMLTV for program data. Q1
Add the playlist
In the player’s IPTV or live TV settings, choose the option for an M3U file or URL. Paste the complete address without extra spaces, or select the saved file. Save the setting and refresh the channel list.
Confirm that groups or channels appear, then open one channel. If nothing loads, check the URL, account status, and access period. EPG data cannot repair an unavailable stream.
Add the EPG source
Enter the XMLTV file or URL in the player’s EPG settings, save it, and refresh the guide. The download may take a little time. Then open the channel list or program guide.
If the guide is blank, compare the channel identifier in the playlist with the corresponding ID in the XMLTV data. Some players match by name; others rely on an ID such as tvg-id or a manual mapping. Kodi documents this relationship between M3U entries and XMLTV data. Q1
Channels play, but the guide is blank
Work through these checks in order:
- Is the channel visible and playable? If so, the playlist is at least loading.
- Did you save a separate EPG source? The playlist URL does not automatically provide XMLTV data.
- Is the device date, time, and time zone correct?
- Do the channel names or IDs match the guide data?
- Did you refresh the EPG cache and allow the import to finish?
Change one thing at a time. If only a few channels lack guide entries, inspect those IDs and records first.
Understand the error you see
“Playlist not found” points toward the source URL, format, or access details. “No program data” points toward the EPG import or channel mapping. “Channel unavailable” may involve authorization, an unsupported stream type, or a service restriction. Note the exact message and affected channel before deleting the setup.
Protect private source details
M3U and EPG are technical formats; they do not say whether a service is authorized, reliable, or available in your location. Do not enter credentials into unrelated testing sites. A playlist URL may contain private information, so do not post it publicly.
For choosing a playback app, see the player comparison. For interrupted playback, use the buffering troubleshooting guide.
